Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. is never satisfied with the status quo when
it comes to efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. Zoo Med's
consideration for green values directs the company on its journey
toward the appreciation and preservation of wildlife and the natural
environment. Zoo Med strives to be on the forefront of green practices
in hopes of influencing other pet companies to do what they can to help
protect this fragile, ever-changing planet that we all share.
The following are some of Zoo Med's current practices in the spirit of “Going Green"!

Aggressive Recycling Program
Zoo Med recycles over 100 tons of cardboard and paper each year.
Bamboo in the Workplace
Zoo Med uses no petrochemical based carpet in their
offices, but instead uses bamboo flooring as well as bamboo bookcases.
Bamboo is a type of grass, making it an exceptionally renewable
resource.
Efficient Commuting
Nearly 40% of Zoo Med employees carpool or ride their bikes
to work! The Founder and President, Gary Bagnall encourages his employees to carpool or ride to work
and will soon be implementing an incentive program to promote efficient forms of transportation.
Recycled Material Furniture
All of the lunchroom furniture in Zoo Med's outdoor dining area is made from recycled milk cartons.
Zero-Emission Electric Car
The President of Zoo Med plans to purchase one of the first production electric cars off the assembly line in January 2010; a Phoenix Electric SUV (www.phoenixmotorcars.com). This fully electric car (Yes, uses NO gasoline) is capable of going 95 mph with a range of 130 miles on a single charge. The car can fully charge its battery system in 10 minutes! Check out their website listed above! In the meantime, the Zoo Med President drives a hybrid.
Solar / Geothermal
Zoo Med is aggressively looking to go solar or geothermal within the next 5 years. This is an expensive proposition considering the payback is not for 20+ years, but the company's goal is to ultimately reduce its carbon footprint by a minimum of 50%. Look for future updates on Zoo Med's progress...
Carbon Neutral / Carbon Credits
The management at Zoo Med has looked into reducing the company's “travel” carbon footprint to zero, but is not convinced the current companies offering “carbon credits” have a third party check system in place that Zoo Med can fully embrace. Ultimately, the company may purchase land to grow a “tree farm” that will help offset the "travel" carbon footprint. Look for future updates on Zoo Med's progress...
