Zoo Med Labs, Inc. looks at our green values as a journey and not a destination. As a company we are never satisfied with the "status quo" and this applies to our green values as well. We hope that what we do as a company will influence other pet companies to look at this ever changing fragile planet in a different light.
Currently, this is what we do as a company as our small part of “Going Green”
www.nrdc.org (5 year President Status Members)
We recycle over 100 tons of cardboard and paper per year.
Zoo Med uses no petrochemical based carpet in our offices but instead uses bamboo flooring as well as bamboo bookcases. (Bamboo is a grass, a huge “green product” and a renewable resource!)
We encourage all our employees to carpool and we will install employee incentives in 2008 for carpooling.
All our lunchroom outdoor furniture is made from recycled milk cartons.
The president of Zoo Med plans to purchase one of the first production electric cars off the assembly line in January 2008; a (). This fully electric car (Yes, uses NO gasoline) is capable of going 95 mph with a range of 130 miles on a single charge. The car can fully charge its battery system in 10 minutes! Check out their website listed above!
Zoo Med is aggressively looking to go solar or geothermal within the next 5 years. This is an expensive proposition considering the payback is not for 20+ years but we want to ultimately reduce our carbon footprint by a minimum of 50%. We will keep you updated!
We have looked into reducing our “travel” carbon foot print to zero but we are not convinced the companies currently out there offering “carbon credits” have a third party check system in place that we as a company can embrace or understand. In the end we may end up purchasing land for our own “tree farm” to offset our travel carbon footprint. More on this later…
