In 1993 at the age of 19, Karim Daoues followed his childhood passion of opening a reptile shop. 30 years later, La Ferme Tropicale is the biggest reptile store in France. It’s divided into two main facilities: the 7000 square foot store (which is an institution in Paris), and the quarantine center (which is over 9000 square feet).

They keep a huge variety of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, such as tree monitors (green, yellow, black, and blue), crocodile monitors, Mexican blacktail cribos, dragon snakes, and more. They also breed many species themselves, like rhino iguanas, radiated tortoises, corn snakes, and ball pythons. In the future, they hope to have successful breeding with their trio of lace monitors and trio of Chiapan beaded lizards.

Karim says the love of reptiles came naturally as a child. “As far as I can remember, I have always been interested in animals. I do not have any picture of these adventures, but I still see myself playing with earthworms. I also remember the first lizard I made lose its tail (something I am not proud of, even 45 years later). While growing up, reptiles have quickly become my favorite kind of animals.”

La Ferme Tropicale also focuses heavily on education. They offer a huge variety of books, including one Karim wrote, they’ve created several educational courses for all experience levels, and they also make YouTube a priority to educate customers online as well.

If you’re ever in Paris, make sure to visit to La Ferme Tropicale!
