10 years ago, Joe Aversa took over an aging Pet Store called the Aquarium on Route 4 in Elmwood Park, NJ. Two locations and a name change later has brought NJ Exotic Pets to where it is today. Opening its doors to the public in June of 2021, NJ Exotic Pets set out from the start to give customers not only a pet store, but an ‘experience’ to enjoy.

Walk through a cave of creepy-crawly pet displays, see a barnyard of potbelly pigs, skunks, and hedgehogs, or visit their aviary with toucans, macaws, and conures. Store artwork and displays were custom-designed and created by one of the store’s employees. It’s easy to forget you walked in off the street and you’re not in the jungle or a country barnyard.

Joe’s teammate at NJ Exotic Pets is Megan, the store’s long-time manager, Megan, and her staff are always eager to help customers with any of their reptile, small animal, or avian needs. Along with their specialty and huge selection in reptiles, they also have a reputation for carrying unusual exotic mammals. It’s not uncommon to see coatimundis, kinkajous, skunks, hedgehogs, and multiple varieties of opossums!
