Our store of the month for October is Scales ‘N Tails in Colorado! First opened in 1996 in by Jim Whitt in Denver, and over the last 27 years is has expanded to 15 locations across four states! In 2011 he started franchising the store, and that’s when Ronald bought his first location in Colorado Springs. Ronald’s family now owns three Scales ‘N Tails locations (two in Colorado Springs, and one in Boulder).

They have a wide range of reptiles and amphibians available, and they breed many reptiles in house, including bearded dragons, boas, woma pythons, and Cuvier’s Dwarf Wedgehead Caimans (Paleosuchus palpebrosus). They are most proud of their caiman breeding project, and they’ve already had five successful clutches.

In addition to reptiles and amphibians, they also have small exotic mammals like sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and Brazilian short-tail opossums.

Ronald says the inspiration for opening the store was “spreading my passion for reptiles and other exotic animals into others is a big reason why we do what we do. Helping someone take proper care of their pet reptiles is so important for the animal’s livelihood and well-being. Helping people get over their fear of snakes or tarantulas is so rewarding because they only fear them because they lack knowledge about them.”

In his free time, Ronald enjoys being a “die-hard Denver sports fan” and archery big game hunting.

If you live in Colorado or ever pass through, make sure to visit Scales ‘N Tails!
