Our store of the month for September is Animal House Pets and Supplies in Mukwonago, Wisconsin! Animal House opened in 2015 and quickly established itself in Southeast Wisconsin as a destination reptile specialty store. In 2022, Jason Cardinal took over the store. As a child, Jason always wanted to keep reptiles, but his mom instead bought him a goldfish, then a parakeet, and a cat before he got his first crested gecko when he was 16.
Jason has been in the pet industry his entire working life. He started by running a fish store in Los Angeles and then worked at several other independent and chain stores throughout the years. He also breeds New Caledonian geckos, and has an extra interest in Chahoua geckos.
At Animal House, Jason strives to concentrate on high-quality captive-bred animals to not only ensure the viability of the animals he sells in captivity and the wild but also to make sure that his customers are set up for the best possible chance for success. One of the store’s goals is to expand the variety of species that are available in the store to include some of the lesser-known, more underrated species, such as conehead lizards, calotes, and rhinoceros rat snakes. They still plan to stick to their roots by maintaining their high-quality, bred-in-store New Caledonian geckos in the store as well.
The store has also recently expanded its selection of products for small animals, birds, and fish, as they recognized that many of their reptile keepers were having to go somewhere else for their other pets. Ultimately, their goal is to be a reptile specialty store that can service all of their customers’ needs at one stop. Their current focus is creating natural-looking, bioactive habitats for customers, as this is what brought Jason into the hobby, and it will also complement the customers’ homes and lifestyles while meeting the needs of the animals.
Make sure you stop by Animal House Pets and Supplies when you are in Southeast Wisconsin, and stop by and visit them if you see them at a reptile show in the area.
