Jim Taylor opened Summit Zoo Pets on April 1 of this year as “one last hurrah” in his 40-year career in the pet industry. After starting out raising fish and rabbits as a kid, Jim knew his calling was in the pet store and has opened and sold 7 successful stores before starting on his mission to bring a full family pet experience that could serve as a destination location for pet hobbyists, breeders, and new keepers.
Inside the grand entrance of this 17,500 sq ft store, you will find a full line selection of animals from fish to reptiles, small animals, and birds, as well as puppies and rescue dogs. The store also offers birthday parties, store tours, doggy daycare, boarding, and corporate events.
With the continual pressure from online sales, the store is concentrating on bringing a returned focus to the hardest part of pet sales: the pets themselves. Their goal is to create not only a need for picking up pet supplies but also a want to visit the store to show what they have to offer.
The reptile department sits in the center of the store as a focal point for all to see and experience. Jim notes that the fish and reptile departments are his favorite part of the store as they bring him the most relaxation. With a selection of both locally bred and quality sourced reptiles and amphibians, the options vary from the more common geckos and corn snakes to green tree pythons, chameleons, and a large collection of tarantulas. They also sell a variety of plants for terrariums and aquatic setups.
Jim’s 40 years in pet retail have helped him to recruit staff members who share his passion and bring many years of experience with reptiles, fish, and more, both inside of stores and out. When Jim isn’t in the store, he is off playing with either his grandkids or his 3 dogs. If you’re ever in Lee’s Summit, MO, make sure to stop by!
