Our store of the month for August is Pet Kingdom in San Diego, California! Inside its gates you’ll find many glass houses for the colorful collection of subjects who call this kingdom home. Reptiles, amphibians, insects (including tarantula slings, scorplings and an array of feeders), freshwater and saltwater fish, corals, and the occasional emu/chicken chicks can all be found in the maze of aisles here.
Pet Kingdom was originally opened by Bill Bennet in 1982, but was purchased by Matt Thomas and Chris Ryan 8 years ago. Matt and Chris expanded further 8 months ago with the purchase of a 4-acre breeding facility specializing in rock iguanas and tortoises. This was an especially exciting purchase to Matt, who said turtles and tortoises are his favorite animals to work with. The offspring from “Rancho de las Tortugas” are available for purchase at the store.
Known as the “free zoo” of San Diego, Pet Kingdom hosts school tours and welcomes guests visiting from all over the world during non-pandemic times. With recent events however, they’ve requested paying customers only so they can limit crowds and exposure.
Whether you’re local or not, Pet Kingdom has a website where you can purchase most of their selection from the comfort of your couch, and they’re working to expand this e-commerce project in the future.
Most employees at Pet Kingdom have been in the reptile or aquarium hobby for 20+ years, and can answer any questions customers have about species specific care. If you can track down Matt, you can pick his brain about cars and motorcycles as well!
If you’re in the San Diego area, or have access to the internet, make sure to check out Pet Kingdom this month!
